Assignment #4: Critical Research Paper

As you've seen over the past weeks, finding, analyzing, and synthesizing an argument out of secondary articles is one of the primary modus operandi of the study of literature. Almost all the articles we've read have made reference to other articles while at the same time producing a reading of a text. For this assignment, that's precisely what you'll do.

For this assignment, you will:

  • Pick something we've read this year but that you haven't written on already: The Metamorphosis, Fight Club, The Aleph, The Love of a Good Woman, In the Skin of a Lion.
  • Find at least three critical, peer-reviewed articles about your text and read them.
  • Use three of the articles you've read to create your own reading of the text.
  • Write a 7-8 page paper performing this reading, integrating all three articles, remembering to cite extensively.
  • Additionaly your paper will:

  • Make many explicit, cited quotations of the text to support your analysis (with citations!)
  • Make no block quotations.
  • Be 7 or 8 pages in length (more than seven complete pages and no more than eight), double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman font, with your name and page numbers in the header.
  • Have a title that does NOT involve a colon at the top of the page.
  • Have a filename on the pattern (Surname)-(Given Name)-(Assignment4)-(Text Name).(doc/docx), like so: FordBurley-Richard-Assignment4-FightClub.doc.
  • Have a works cited page (not included in the page count), MLA formatted, with your three articles.
  • Be e-mailed to me at richard.burley@bc.edu no later than 11:59pm on Friday, May 2.
  • Did I mention citations?
